During the first lockdown many people attested to the power of birdsong to raise their spirits. There’s a dislocated and uncomfortable feel to this song, which is at odds with the joy I feel in birdsong, yet I loved that recurring phrase and its delivery, altering the song and holding up the phrasing… unexpected… very like a bird. When I lived in the Chilterns I would walk in the woods with wrens ringing out loud all around me. Sometimes I’d get a glimpse of a little rump disappearing into a brush pile! It was a roommin an old furniture factory: a building that was flaking, rusty, creaky, dusty, leaking and dodgy. I loved my time there. Looking out through my large, warped industrial window I could catch glimpses of gardens of the Edwardian houses of Kitchener Road that had seen better days. You could tell these were once much-loved homes: apple trees and magnolias blossomed in spring and roses bloomed above the brambles in summer. My room was over a tunnel that led through to the back of the building: pigeons roosted in the tunnel, under my floor. I could hear their cooing through the floorboards. She works with natural dyes and botanical contact printing ( ecoprinting) to produce wearable art, wall art and home textiles. Working from her garden studio in Long Compton, Warwickshire, she captures the beauty of nature using the pigments and imprints of the leaves themselves – no synthetic ink, dyes or silk screens are involved. A combination of pressure and steam coaxes the pigments from the leaves into the cloth or paper. The naturally occurring colours are soft and harmonious, and the process is non polluting and respectful of the environment. The plants and dyes come from sustainable sources - many are grown in her own garden. The smallest change in plant species, climatic conditions or water source can produce marked variations in the prints, meaning every item is unique. The textiles used are natural fibres, organically produced and ethically sourced wherever possible. Vintage textiles are also upcycled, giving them a new lease of life. Much of the linen and lace is sourced from French brocantes and local charity shops. The cooking pots used for processing are also recycled - copper preserving pans, cast iron laundry pots, aluminium cooking pots. The central panel is an extract from the poem ‘Pennine Ramble’ written by Ebron, which was first published in “A Lancashire Miscellany”, a newspaper column featured in weekend editions of the Oldham Chronicle between 1956 and 1959. The words around the outer border depict a memory from my own childhood of visiting my Grandparents in Stacksteads, Lancashire. On sunny days they would pack a picnic and say ‘Let’s go up clough’. For me this meant a short walk up the footpath, past the farm with a Border Collie dog and ducks, over the stile and through the broken dry-stone walls, followed by a steep climb up to the clough and the brook where the water flowed fresh from the moors. I’ve spent many summers since, sitting on the same rock, under the tree and paddling my feed in the cool water. Her artistic vision is drawn from the rich heritage, local dialect and childhood memories growing up in the English county of Lancashire in the 1970’s. Some people write memoirs, Catherine makes hand-stitched embroideries capturing these memories in cloth. Catherine is a self-taught embroiderer. Each artwork is created with materials from her personal collection of vintage threads and cotton cloth. Her defined colour palette is inspired by the Red Rose of Lancashire. Her art has been exhibited across the UK, USA and Australia.
